Exploits of a Vegan Wannabe

As promised, a full review of the SugarHigh bakery I found in Frankenmuth, Michigan. A little slice of vegan joy in Michigan’s Little Bavaria. Owner and head chef Heather is so fun and easy to talk to…you forget she is working and want to hang out in her shop all day. When we met, her new shop had only been open a week and  was already packed.

The day we wandered in she encouraged us to try her fresh Watermelon Sorbet. It was creamy and sweet and tart and luscious. The texture was so profound that she had to have performed some type of molecular gastronomy on it.

I inquired about vegan cupcakes (cause thats what I do) and she did not have any right then, but said she would have some the next day for me to try. During a three day event that attracted over 40,000 visitors, her first week open…she was willing to whip up some vegan cupcakes for us to try!!

The next day she had three varieties of vegan cupcakes…chocolate, vanilla and peppermint. I was pulled to the chocolate like a magnet to its mate. The frosting was so dreamy, chocolatey and luscious that had it not come straight from her hand to mine…I would have doubted its vegan authenticity. The marble cupcake was dense and moist yet light and airy. We shared it with two non vegan friends  and they could not believe how amazing it was.  *Note there are no pictures of said cupcake.  It did not last long enough to be photographed.

Heather’s work is imaginative and modern with the classic flavors of things you love.  She has everything from artisan chocolates and spectacular wedding cakes to cupcakes and gelato. Her store SugarHigh Bakery is located in the River Place Shops at 925 South Main St. Suite G1 in Frankenmuth, Mi.
