7/3 First Vegan Holiday
We have almost made it through our first official holiday as vegan. Last night we went to an event that is a summer tradition for us and we rocked it vegan style. The event is an outdoor concert featuring the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. They play all of your patriotic faves, concluding with the 1812 Overture and one of the most goose bump producing fireworks displays.
You can bring coolers packed with all of your favorite things to enjoy. Summer would feel officially cancelled for me if we didn’t get to go. We plan our menu at least a week out with all of our most favorite picnic things. This year it was completely different, our menu of course was vegan. I have to be honest, at first I silently began to fret. What is a picnic without spinach dip and Mexicali Dip? There was no way I could share this fear with Sandy because this whole thing was my idea. I had to press on. I decided to release the need for dairy laden picnic edibles and just see what happened.
Sandy made the most amazing penne pasta salad. It was chock full of fresh herbs, diced produce and vibrant flavors. I made Tofurkey sandwiches with my homemade hummus, mustard and fresh broccoli sprouts from the farmers market. I also made my first ever batch of vegan dark chocolate and pecan with sea salt cookies. For the love of all that is holy they were outrageous (more on those next week).
My point is that we didn’t miss a thing. We had an amazing picnic with new favorites. We took a tradition and changed it just like that. We created a new tradition and it was that easy. Besides the amazing menu, the meal came with a healthful sense of well being and an abundant sense of accomplishment. Thank you, I would like to super-size that!
Tomorrow we are going to our first large family gathering as the new vegans. I am now confident we will rock that as well. We are bringing a vegan dish to pass and our own yummies to grill. We wont stand out and no one will ever know. We will just be the cool healthy, vegan chicks by the pool.
We can do this, we all can. Change doesn’t have to be scary but even if it is…we can do it anyway. Have a delicious holiday weekend and happy Fourth of July.
