8/16 The Feel of Summer
Over the weekend we splurged on a box of new veggie burgers, Amy’s Quarter Pound Veggie Burgers. They are organic, vegan and crafted with non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) ingredients. I put them in the cart feeling more skeptical than optimistic. What could they possibly do to this thing that hasn’t already been done? They are more expensive than the veggie burgers we usually buy and have more calories and fat than the burgers we usually purchase. But still, I want to sample vegan eats at our disposal, so I was curious to try them.
In order to really experience such a size-able burger we bought humongous onion rolls, the kind that would be served in the Hamptons at Barefoot Contessas house. As Sandy grilled the burgers and corn, I readied the lettuce, dill pickle chips and every condiment I could get my hands on. We were going to give this behemoth a real chance to wow us.
Once the burgers were off the grill and inside, I dressed mine thoughtfully like it was about to debut in a parade. I filled my plate with Sandy’s Vegan Cowgirl BBQ Baked Beans and sat down at the table for a taste of truth. I gripped it with both hands and brought it to my lips. The moment I was locked into a man sized bite I had a very strong sense memory. It was the recollection in every cell of my body of every time I had ever brought a perfectly grilled quarter pound burger up to my lips. The summer parties, the BBQ’s the Fourth of July, being on our boat when I was little. I think recollections of events that weren’t even mine came to mind, the same way we are nostalgic for a Christmas that we never really experienced but have seen on TV. It was magical. The burger was like a time machine for long sun-shiny days filled with sprinklers and dripping popsicles.
Every smell and bite was better than the the last. It was juicy and huge and flavorful in a way that was astonishing. Two days later all I had to do was turn to Sandy and say,” How bout that burger,” and it would plunge us both in to a tangent of descriptive foodie words and plans for the next quarter pounder.
They were worth the extra money and they were worth the wait. Abandon your computer and rush to your nearest freezer section.
Have a delicious day and fire up your grill.

Shauna, do not be deterred by the price…they are really worth it. We had them twice in one week because I couldn’t sleep knowing the other two burgers were in the freezer.
