10/16 The Multiplying Vegans
The most interesting thing has been happening. As Sandy and I have moved forward on our vegan journey we have been meeting vegans left and right. Not a week goes by that we don’t meet another vegan or vegan wannabe. I am not even referring to the specialty vegan events like potlucks or cooking classes we have been attending, but at everyday places like the farmers market or down the street from our house or while volunteering. In the 13 years that I have been vegetarian I have never met a vegan and now I encounter them everywhere.
So here is my question, are there more vegans than before or are we simply drawing them to us like vegan magnets? I find it so fascinating and exciting. When I was vegetarian, being vegan seemed so fringe and foreign to me. It seemed like an entirely different breed of social activism that I was not prepared to take on.
But it didn’t turn out that way, it is much simpler. In the four months that we have been vegan it has felt so everyday and common because we continue to meet more and more people interested in adding more plant based foods to their diets while reducing their consumption of meat and fish. The desire to share with one another is immediate. It has been inspiring and normalizing. I strive to be unique and passionate, but am not interested in feeling like a social pariah either. It has really been lovely to meet so many others interested in changing the world one meal at a time.
Because I love her moxy, here is another photo of the squirrel that devoured my pumpkin. She has been vegan the last few days for sure. Look closely or click on the photo to enlarge, she even has some on her face!
Have a delicious weekend.
