10/22 Vegetarian Awareness Month Contest
Okay, everything has a month, from baked beans (November) to peaches (August) and every cause and food item in between. As it happens, October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, designated in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society. See them online NAVS.
The purpose of Vegetarian Awareness Month is to illustrate the benefits of being a compassionate consumer and to share in how delicious both vegetarian and vegan foods can be. It is a fantastic time to explore new edibles while becoming more aware of our limitless options.
Having been vegetarian for 13 years before choosing vegan in July of this year, I’ve learned how rich in flavor, soul satisfying and downright yummy veg foods really are. Starting on vegetarian awareness day, October 1st, the month celebrates the innumerable benefits of choosing this compassionate eating style. I found this interesting website that explains more including some of the health benefits of choosing veg: Health & Wellness, Assoc Content

Ooh! Please enter me in this contest! btw, I love your site.
I became vegan in June of this year after reading about the many benefits this type of diet provides. I was not a vegetarian prior to going vegan. It started as a 1 month challenge I gave myself and was something I had always wanted to try. My husband also chose to try it with me. We have continued past the 1 month and are still very happy today.
My grandmother passed away in August from a massive heart attack while recuperating from colon cancer. This was somewhat of a wake up call for me to lead a healthier lifestyle. Since going vegan, I have felt better and healthier.
In early October, I convinced my mom to consider a vegetarian/vegan diet, or at the very least, choosing a few veg meals a week. She has been testing new recipes on us when we visit, all of which have been good so far.
Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Hi Nathalie, thank you for your kind words and for sharing your journey. Congratulations on your success and kudos for sharing it with other members of your family. That is exactly how to create great change by exciting those around you to try it for themselves. I love that your mom is trying her new recipes on you and your husband. What a beautiful way to break bread with those you cherish.
You are entered into the contest. Thank you for reading and for sharing.

Hi Sherry,
You and Sandy are really doing great and your new food style seems to have even blossomed into some wonderful new adventures! We just learned that my grandson, Zenn is highly allergic to all milk categories, eggs, and some legumes to a lesser degree. I could use some vegan recommendations regarding the best dairy replacers you have found and especially those that might be high in fat as the little guy, 13 mo old needs lots of fat in his diet.

Ooh! yesterday we just learned Zenn is at the anaphylaxis stage for eggs and peanuts. Poor little guy.
Congrats on you new job! Let me know if you’ve discovered any vegan egg replacers or dairy or margarine that you think has a good flavor.

Hi Bobbe,
We love Earth Balance butter. It is available in dairy free and soy free. It is available at most major retailers including Meijer. We have not yet tried Ener-G egg replacement, but it is used in many, many recipes I have seen. Here is a link to their site. http://www.ener-g.com/
Can Zenn have coconut products or does that go along with the peanut allergy? Coconut milk, oil, yogurt, butter….these are all beautiful products that we enjoy regularly.
The Go Vegan Week prize pack that I am sending you is chock full of dairy free recipes that you will enjoy. In addition, all of the recipes I have posted on the blog under the Recipe drop down are easy to prepare and can help in your transition with Zenn.
Feel free to keep asking questions. If we dont know the answer or the product…we will gladly help you find it.

Thanks so much Sherry. I am looking forward to the information packet. Unfortunately, Zenn also has the coconut allergy along with all tree nuts and peanuts, all milk and milk based products, and eggs. That eliminates coconut milk, almond milk, and the like. He is drinking rice milk, but we worry since he’s only 13 mo old, about his little brain getting enough fat. We also have to be careful because believe it or not, we have found casein in so called vegan products. I don’t know how they get away with that because it is a milk substance, thus an allergen.
The thought of having to use one of these epi-pens on him is frightening – so we read everything and error on the side of extreme caution.
Thanks again! Can’t wait to get your info packet.

You are welcome Bobbe. I cant wait for you to receive your packet of great things and hear what you enjoyed making from the recipes. I am sorry to hear about this very scary information about Zenn. We will continue to share vegan info and recipes to feed your soul and your family.
