12/28 Vegetarian & Vegan. A Trend in 2011?
A list of top 10 food trends for 2011 includes Meatless Mondays and Tofu Thursdays says Epicurious.com. The food site gurus provide predictions for their best estimate on what new food trends will be popular in the upcoming year. In the round up they list restaurant trends, niche food, beverages and now in the list for 2011 is adding more vegan and vegetarian choices on dinner plates. Cool, we couldn’t agree more.
There are health reasons, compassionate reasons and the fact that people are learning that preparing vegan and vegetarian foods does not mean you have to give up taste. Food shows, magazines, blogs and more are providing countless imaginative ways to prepare vegan foods that bring taste to the table first.
Meat alternative products are becoming so mainstream that grocery stores are carrying depth in veggie burgers, veggie chik’n, all sorts of tofu options, vegan dairy products and much more on their shelves.
I am elated that the veg style of eating and living is getting this sort of attention. For so long, it has felt like those of us “on the fringe” or so-called health-nuts or extremists were living outside the norm or going against the grain. The more popular or “in” consuming compassionately becomes…the better it is for all of us…novice or experienced veggies alike. The easier it is to be or become a compassionate consumer the more likely people are to adopt that philosophy into their once a week or every day. I love it! Let’s keep it going, one meal at a time.

unfortunately the trend is only hitting the trendy areas….. i live in an area heavily populated by minorities and the grocery stores are still not carrying much beyond veggie burgers and fak’n bacon. I guess i can thank subway for the veggie patty, but everyone else still has work to do lol.

Be Randy, you are so right. We can help by asking all of our local stores to stock the products we would like to see. Then, we can make ourselves heard with our wallets.
