1/18 Supplemental Health
I have to admit that after watching the movie Food Matters I have really been thinking alot about vitamin supplements. I have always been a now and then consumer of supplements. I would be diligent for a while and then fall off the vitamin wagon. I would read something about vitamin fill in the blank and take it until it was gone, but wouldn’t necessarily replace it. So, I am asking all of you vegans, meatatarians, omnis and wannabes…..do you take supplements? If so, whats in your daily regimen that is promoting great health? We can all benefit from each others knowledge.
I found this site called VegHealthGuide that looks really bountiful in information. They wisely suggest that before you start popping multi’s willy nilly you should consult your physician or nutritionist about your specific needs. The site suggests that vegetarians and vegans would benefit from focusing on adequate amounts of iron, B12, Iodine and Calcium and Essential Fatty Acids. They expand on this information and share other links as well.
I also found a site called VeganHealth.org which is a project of Vegan Outreach. There is an abundance of information on vitamins and minerals that vegetarians and vegans would like to incorporate in to their diets. They also share a nutritional recommendation chart. Think food pyramid that deals with the most necessary vitamins and minerals.
Ideally we would all like to be consuming the right amount of foods in the most beneficial combinations to reap the nutritional rewards. But the truth is….I am not opposed to taking some veg supplements to ensure optimal health and physical goddessness, as long as it is warranted and necessary.
I will continue to seek out reliable and intriguing information and you do the same. Everything is more fun with friends and certainly the more information we have the greater our opportunity will be to move forward making healthful and enlightened choices.
Have a delicious day.

Hi. I take Vitamin D, B12 & Vitamin C. I read that Vegans only need D and B12. I also take a tsp of Algae ( minerals) a day .

My supplement protocol is as follows: vitamin D, probiotic, and B12. I do take a multivitamin during periods of lots of stress or sickness in my house, mostly because I know that I do not always take adequate care of myself during those times. The only multi I’ve ever liked is Dr. Fuhrman’s Gentle Care. I *try* to drink a lot of nettle tea for the calcium and adaptogenic benefits, but sometimes I fall off that wagon.

I’m on my iPhone so I can’t post links, but for good information on nettles (and anything herbal) google Kiva Rose or Susun Weed. The probiotic I use is All Flora by New Chapter, in capsule form. This is their vegan probiotic. My personal experience has been that my gut health is the main determinant of my overall health, so the probiotic helps to keep things balanced in there. I do take weeks off from it to maintain balance. Gentle Care multivitamins can be purchased on Dr. Fuhrman’s website.
