6/30 A Landmark Exploits Day
Today marks another milestone along the journey of the Exploits blog. It is the first full year of being vegan. The initial months of the blog shared ways in which we explored various aspects of eating vegan, how to substitute foods we enjoyed with new compassionate versions, seeking recipes and learning more about foods that contained “hidden” or less evident animal products in them.
A year ago today we embarked on what we thought would be a 30 day challenge and has proven to have changed our lives in so many ways. Here is the post from a year ago, in which the Vegan Challenge Begins. Thank you for sharing in this experience, whether you have been a part for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year, I love enjoying it together with you, changing the world, one meal at a time.
Here is a funny one year story of being vegan. One of my all time favorite junk food treats has always been potato chips and french onion dip. It is something that just came naturally on the weekends, at parties or just to devour on a weeknight for no reason. I just realized that I haven’t had any since being vegan. Now, one later, I found a great way to indulge in this treat, a bit more compassionately.
They’ve Gone Mad Over the Dip
I love dipping. In fact, I have long believed that food is simply a vehicle for condiments….dipping has always been my thing. Once I even invented a Dipping Crane, but that is a story for another time.
We have had healthy hummus dips and veg dips but no chip dip until the other day. I bought a packet of Simply Organic french onion dip mix on a whim. I don’t even know why I picked it up to look and see if it was vegan but I did. We were going to an outdoor party so I thought that if this dip was any good, it would really be fun to have with some kettle chips and a cold brewski.
I mixed the packet with some Tofutti sour cream and put it in the fridge to chill. Several hours later when I tasted it for the first time I could hardly believe how yummy it was without adding a thing…just sour cream. It isn’t a health food, I didn’t make it from scratch…it is simply an amazing chip dip. If you are looking for an authentic, lower sodium, compassionate version of what you have loved in the past…this is it.
So we brought it to the party and as everyone was putting out their munchies I saw that people had brought many of my old dairy based favorite dips. I was really happy to have a dip that we cold enjoy. Our undoing was when I told others at the party that we had brought a vegan dip. They tasted it out of curiosity and then in a moment of complete madness, flying arms, hands and kettle chips….the dip was gone. They ate it all. All that was left was a table full of regular dairy dips. I thought the dip was that good and obviously they did as well.
This is the perfect dip for your next backyard party or if you’re just dying for some good old fashioned chips and dip like I was. You will find Simply Organic dip mixes at most health food stores and in many large chain grocery stores. You may also purchase online here.
Have a delicious day.

JL,
This weekend we went to a 4th of July party with some of the same meaty lovin people that scarfed down the first batch of vegan french onion dip. We didn’t even made it up the driveway and someone (accosted us) asked us if we brought the vegan dip. I love that.
