9/28 World Vegetarian Awareness Month
October is recognized as World Vegetarian Awareness Month. The cool thing about this recognition month is that it has tangible benefits for participating.
1. It can improve personal health.
2. It can help improve the health of the planet.
3. You can win $$ for going vegetarian during October. What?
4. If you create a Veg activity to promote Vegetarian Awareness Month, you can win a trip to Summerfest next July. (We just talked bout this yesterday. Who knew veg movie night could be a fun and easy way to win some dough?)
This seems to add up to success to me. The site World Vegetarian Day from the North American Vegetarian Society is dedicated to sharing about all the above and more. It includes a pledge challenge, to try Vegetarianism for the month of October and have a chance to win up to $1000. There are three levels to win, pledging for a day, for a week or the whole month. The idea is to ask non-vegetarian friends and family to try going meatless in a pledge challenge and they are entered into a random drawing.
This non-meaty celebration also encourages “veggies” to take action to spread the word about going veg. Besides tips and educational posters, there is even a contest attached to this too, for the most creative veg activity during the month. The winner receives free entry, accommodation and meals to next year’s Vegetarian Summerfest in Pennsylvania. Yes, I’m going to put on my thinking cap for this one. I have wanted to attend this conference before and would love to win the contest.
Meanwhile, helping to spread the news about vegetarian awareness month is a creative portal website that is an honor roll of blogs called Vegan MoFo (Vegan Month of Food). Vegan MoFo was founded by Isa Chandra Moskowitz of Post Punk Kitchen and vegan cookbook Veganomicon reknown. She has gathered an assembly of over 800 bloggers who have committed to write about all things vegan during the month of October. Even those who are not veggie, but are willing to write about their vegan food, experiences or insights are welcome.
Exploits is a contributing blog on Vegan MoFo again this year and I am excited to be participating. It feels like. taking a virtual road trip with a bunch of crazy vegans I’ve never met anywhere besides cyberspace. I’m not sure how to pack for this one. No Lara Bars needed. The fun begins October 1st and continues throughout the month. MoFo encourages its bloggers to host giveaways and if last year is any gauge, there will be many. Exploits will play along and offer a giveaway for sure, details coming soon. I promise to keep you posted about any compelling news and updates from MoFo or other sources as we join together to celebrate World Vegetarian Awareness Month.
Have a delicious day.
