10/14 GMO Labeling Petition

In the past week, I’ve been hearing a lot about the GMO labeling petition.  I’ve seen several email alerts, read on sites and heard people talking about the petition to ask the Food and Drug Administration to require labeling of genetically modified foods.

There are several hundred organizations that have joined forces to promote the petition applying pressure to the FDA.   Among them are Democracy in Action, Care2,  Center for Food Safety and many more working together in what is called the JustLabelIt campaign.   I reviewed some of the sites to find the most concise information possible and the easiest way to navigate to the petition and posted them here for you.

In short, the petition is requesting that any foods that are genetically modified or have ingredients in them that have been genetically modified are labeled as such.  They are not asking for a ban or limitation of use, just that they are labeled properly, so consumers are made aware and can make our own choices.  This sounds reasonable to me and perhaps a little ridiculous that it has not been done already.   Here is a well-crafted article from Rodale News describing the situation with background insight.

If you have already made up your mind to sign the petition, here is a direct link to do so Sign Petition.  They ask for your first and last name, state of residency, zipcode and your email address.  You may un-check receiving updates about the petition if you choose.   Additionally, there is a canned letter that is sent with your signature to the FDA.  If you choose to modify the letter, you can do so easily right on the screen.  It only takes a few moments to do so and is their preferred method, but if you don’t have the time, just send as is.  After you are done there, you have the option to view a funny thirty second video about why labeling GMO foods is important.  Shortcut to view the video here.

If you have come this far and now have an increased appetite for learning more about GMO foods, here is a link to an article on the Center for Food Safety site about Myths and Realities of GE (GMO) Crops. This is really interesting information.  It addresses many of the myths floating around including how GMO foods are supposed to put an end to world hunger, among many other claims.  It states the Myth and provides insight about how or why these claims are misleading or inaccurate.

If GMO foods are so safe, why is anyone afraid of labeling them?   Let the consumers make the choice, label the food so we know what we are buying, it is up to us to decide.    I hope we are able to help make a change, one signature at a time to encourage the FDA to help provide this information.

Have a deliciously informed day.
