3/17 Time for Grillin Dogs
Spring has made an early appearance here in Michigan and it has been magnificent. It is anyone’s guess how long this glorious heat wave will stay and whether or not we will once again see more of the frozen white stuff flying around. The warm sun has been an unexpected gift so we have taken every opportunity to dash outdoors, walk Chloe, ride our bikes and fire up the grill. Ahhh, the smells and sounds of summer have flooded my body and brain with joy. Thank you Spring!
One of my favorite foods on the grill is a veggie dog. I love ’em smothered in mustard, ketchup and dill relish. Yes, please and thank you. One of the first warm days last week I came home from work with veg dogs and buns for dinner. Little did I know…while I was at work Sandy went to the coolest local hot dog diner and had a Chicago Style veg dog for lunch on their tiny patio. So, I brought dogs home and we laughed about both having the same craving at the same time. We still had them for dinner making Sandy an obvious veg dog addict. We sure have missed having them on the grill though, so maybe its okay just this once.
There are so many reasons to be grateful for the abundance of quality veggie dogs to choose from instead of their meaty counterparts…but here is one more that is particularly disturbing. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is telling anyone that will look or listen that processed meats, and hot dogs in particular, have a direct link to colorectal cancer in men. So much so, that PCRM has paid for this crazy billboard to debut in the Chicago area, as Illinois men in particular have a high incidence of hot dog consumption and a corresponding high incidence of this type of cancer.
This billboard gets right to the point and does it in a playful way to help communicate this risk to Chicagoans. Tied to the health risk findings was a study that illustrated that more than a third of adults at large did not realize that their colon is their large intestine. So, PCRM took a rather plain-speak approach to their health findings. Whatever it takes. To learn moare about this information from PCRM , read the full article here.
So, grab a veggie dog and breath a bit easier with the knowledge that your indulgent hot dog choice is both kinder to your body and compassionate for animals at the same time.
Have a delicious weekend outdoors.
