8/24 Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals
I have begun to count the days until the Sasha Farms Animal Sanctuary Annual Vegan Chili Cook-off. Sasha Farms is the closest farm animal sanctuary to us. The chili cook off/fun day is one of the few times you can stroll through the farm meeting the animals and spending time on the land they call home.
Last year we walked for hours taking pictures, loving cows, goats and kitties of all kinds. The experience moved me in an even greater way than I had expected. Having been veg for over 15 years, I didn’t expect to be so affected by befriending a turkey….but I was. It was really special and I can’t wait to go back.
How serendipitous that I just found this book about farm animal sanctuaries. I think it is so expressive and meaningful that I wanted to share with you. It is called Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals. It is a compilation of portraits of rescued farm animals that are now living out their lives in peace. Sharon Lee Hart, the author and photographer visited sanctuaries around the country and photographed the animals she met. To help her edit the photos, she relied on those that work with the animals in order to accurately capture their personalities. The photos are stirring and beautiful. She has captured the soft look of gratitude born from a previous life consumed by fear.
Sanctuary also contains essays from famed animals heroes Gene Bauer (Farm Sanctuary), Kathy Stevens (Catskill Animal Sanctuary) and Karen Davis (United Poultry Concerns).
The farm animal sanctuary book is $29.95 (Plus shipping and handling) and 10% of the proceeds are donated back to the sanctuaries she visited. You may purchase the book here. Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals.
This is the perfect gift for yourself, your sister, your childs first week at school, any occasion. It says, “I love you and all living things. I see beauty where there once was only sorrow. I love you and I love me too. Happy birthday, anniversary, Meatless Monday….happy any day”.
