11/16 Battle of the Eggnogs
Eggnog is one of the things I look forward to with baited breath every holiday season. I love its comforting, smooth drinkability and its warm spicy flavor. I am also wooed by its limited availability. Its “enjoy me now because I won’t be here long” attitude makes me want it more.
A few days ago we embarked on a vegan eggnog challenge with two of the leading brands. Silk Nog, an old favorite and So Delicious coconut milk Nog. I enlisted the help of Sandy and our friend Jo. Women with discriminating palates and fellow lovers of the nog. I created a blind taste test.
And the results were……..three out of three vegan wannabes prefer Silk Nog. Here’s why. Silk tastes most like a traditional spicy nog. It has hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. It is rich and creamy without being too thick. It enveloped my senses and transformed me to a roaring bon fire in the mountains with Bing Crosby crooning in the background. Silk also has Chocolate Mint and Pumpkin Spice. All limited edition. Maybe you should go get some right now and finish reading the post with a tall glass. Yum.
We did however all agree that the SO Delicious is perfect for those of you seeking a thicker nog. It is more like the type of eggnog you would expect to get from a dairy. It is also less spiced, so if that is your preference, So Delicious has your holiday nog.
I think the true holiday miracle is that there are enough vegan nogs and holiday-centered beverages to host a taste test and actually stand in front of the “dairy” case contemplating. It is easier than ever to choose compassionately when celebrating and that is what the holidays are all about…peace for all.
Here is one of my favorite recipes using eggnog. Enjoy. Eggnog Shortbread w/ Nutmeg Scented Icing
Have a delicious weekend.

I got inspired to try vegan eggnogg! I like silk too, but also love the coconut milk variety!! Thanks for the idea – I didn’t grow upmwith this drink, but it’s very tasty!

Thank you Kiki. I am so glad you tried them both. I did not begin to love the nog until I was an adult, then made the switch to dairy free and I really look forward to it every year. It is a fun and festive way to jump into the holiday spirit.
