2/14 Is Bourbon Vegan?
Happy Love Yourself Day friends. Hope your day has been filled with joy of your own making. We are back on the road headed to Atlanta. The sun is shining and the farther South we drive, the warmer the air gets. Chloe is making the back seat adorable and Sandy is driving us through the Smoky Mountains. We have snacked on Tofurky sandwiches and an endless supply of peanut butter filled pretzels.
Just as we were leaving Kentucky for Tennessee, we stopped to purchased some regional Bourbon for post road trip Manhattans. While staying in Manchester for the past month and a half, I had the opportunity to taste my first Bourbon Manhattan. Turns out VitaMan can make much more than a wicked smoothie. He is also a master Manhattan mixologist.
Sipping my first amber elixir I instantly fell in love. I don’t know why because we are really all wrong for each other. We have nothing in common except for our love of cherries. Four or five happy hours too late I found myself wondering, “Is Bourbon vegan?” It seems like a strange question but not all wine, beer or spirits are vegan. According to Barnivore.com,
“When filtering the drinks prior to bottling, companies can use things like isinglass (from fish bladder,) gelatin, egg whites, and sea shells, among other things. These products grab onto the impurities and make it easier to catch them in the filters, though there are many animal-free alternatives in use. These ingredients don’t usually show up on the label, so the only way to find out is to ask.”

This has taken the concept of drinking responsibly to an entirely new level. If the info is out there and easy to access, why not use it to support companies that are making the effort to use clean and animal free filtration processes? Every choice counts and every dollar spent sends a message that you support those willing to make responsible business decisions.
Both of the Bourbons we purchased are on the list and are vegan friendly. That makes my Manhattan Happy Hours even more toast worthy.
Tomorrow we are going to a gold mine in Northern Georgia for some gem grubbin and panning for gold. I will let you know if I strike it rich.
