5/7 Tempting
For the 14 years I was a vegetarian before becoming vegan I feared giving up ice cream. I was of course fearful without having all the information for I did not know how unbelievable non dairy ice cream could be. There are so many flavors and varieties available that I have really been enjoying trying new ones. I am a seeker of truth, ice cream style.
I found a crave worthy hemp ice cream called Tempt by Living Harvest. I want to share a brief history of hemp as told by Living Harvest and the story of Tempt from their site because it made me smile.
Demystifying hemp according to Tempt.
~Hemp is a plant-based superfood. It is an exceptional dairy alternative and a tasty substitute for nuts and soy. It’s vegan and gluten-free.
~As an agricultural crop, hemp is sustainable, non-GMO and grown without herbicides or pesticides, with no known allergens.
~Hemp is nothing to be afraid of. It’s not marijuana and has no drug value. In fact, it contains 0.00% THC.
Hemp seeds are the edible part of the hemp plant (cannabis sativa I). Some are surprised to learn they are one of the best sources of easily digestible, high-quality protein. Rich in all 10 essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein, hemp helps develop lean body mass and promotes muscular repair. It is an awesome source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids, which support energy production, nervous system function, brain development, heart health and a healthy immune system. Not many foods can do all that.
How Tempt was Born
The seed of an idea for Tempt dates back over a decade to a time when science, education and creativity merged.
It happened at the University of Saskatchewan where scientists seeking a new source of vegetable protein began doing experiments with hemp. These enlightened Canadian researchers discovered the protein potential locked within the hemp seed. The balanced combination of essential fatty and amino acids provided a nutritional profile unlike any other vegetable. The Center for Food Science’s breakthrough gave us a brilliant and sustainable food source, which can be cultivated without negative environmental impact. Celebration ensued.
Fast forward to the Pacific Northwest.
Freedom loving, environmentalist, hempfood pioneers moved the fledgling company to Portland, Oregon. Connections were made with other hemp visionaries, actors, rock stars, natural foods champions, inventors, mad scientists, revolutionaries and hopeless optimists –
Tempt was born. Tempt hemp products multiply. Fans abound.
I was immediately drawn to the coconut lime. You know my feelings about Key Lime Pie. Coconut lime ice cream? Yes please.
You will not believe how rich and creamy this ice cream is. It has the mouth feel of the most premium, heavy cream havin ice cream you have ever enjoyed. But, it is a vegan trickster because this frozen treat is cruelty free and joy-full.The Coconut Lime tasted like frozen key lime pie with toasted coconut. The flavor is unbelievable. Once you have opened the pint you will feel obligated to finish it all and I think you should. It is so limey and creamy you will want to put it in a graham cracker pie shell and create a key lime ice cream pie for your friends. They have several other flavors like Coffee Biscotti and I cant wait to try them all.
As the weather begins to warm I would love to hear about your fave non dairy frozen treats. Do you make them, do you buy them? What are you enjoying?
Have a delicious day.

The two kinds of Tempt frozen treats I’ve tried tasted chemical-ly and had a weird texture. Interesting that you had a different experience. Do not try the coffee. Or the vanilla. So gross. The coffee wasn’t even good blended into a ‘milk’shake. I felt guilty throwing them both away but I just couldn’t do it. I still like coconut milk based ice ‘creams’ the best.

I’m a true blue fan of Turtle Mountain’s yummy frozen desserts. I have simple tastes so I like their fruit-sweetened It’s Soy Delicious Vanilla, but they have a line of Purely Decadent desserts that includes amazing flavors if you’re in the mood to indulge. I’d love to try the Tempt Vanilla and compare the two.

Lacey,
Thank you for the tips. The Coconut Lime is amazing and I think could bring you back to hemp ice cream, but I agree….coconut milk ice cream is out of this world and the perfect frozen dessert.
